Southern Holds on to Beat Grambling at Bayou

Sat, November 24, 2012
NEW ORLEANS (AP) -- Dray Joseph threw for five touchdowns as Southern University overcame an early deficit and held on late to defeat Grambling State 38-33 on Saturday in the Bayou Classic.

Grambling trailed 38-20 early in the fourth quarter but cut into Southern's lead with two touchdowns. The Tigers reached Southern's 41-yard line, but Grambling quarterback Frank Rivers was sacked and fumbled to end the game.

The game marked the end of disappointing seasons for both teams.

Southern (4-7, 3-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference) fired coach Stump Mitchell two games into the season and expects to replace interim coach Dawson Odoms. Grambling (1-10, 0-9), the defending league champion, ended the season with one victory for the first time since 1941 -- the school's inaugural year under legendary coach Eddie Robinson.

Grambling took a 14-0 lead, converting a pair of fumbles by Southern into touchdown passes by D.J. Williams.

Joseph finished with 287 yards passing.

NBA Lessons from Comedy Central's "Workaholics" PT. 1: Let's Get Weird

Comedy Central's "Workaholics," might be more than just a satirical, hippied-out, sarcastic dedication to today's working class (Who knew?).  Between the drugs, drinking, and controlled substances that Anders, Blake and Adam consume on a daily basis, the troubled trio manages to spit out some important (and strange) life lessons; lessons that the sport of basketball (NBA included) have recently come to admire, adhere to, and even practice.

Bare with me here (pun intended).

Lesson 1:  "Let's Get Weird"
-It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that the first three weeks of this NBA season have been as odd as they come.  First things first, the Lakers have a worse record than the Bobcats, the Hornets, the Warriors, and a number of other less-talented teams, and they selected Mike D'Antoni over ex-Lakers Head Coach, Phil Jackson, to be the chosen figure that will solve their multitude of problems and lead them to the promised land.

For a team that's "championship or bust" most analysts assumed that Phil was the easy and obvious choice between the two coaching candidates.  However, Jerry Buss and the Lakers' management went with D'Antoni instead who is arguably the most gifted NBA offensive mind over the past decade.  The downside is that he's not known for his defense (he's an average defensive strategist at best), and he's never been to an NBA Championship as a Head Coach whereas Phil owns 11 championship rings.

If I wanted a championship this year, I probably would've gone another direction, aka the " Phil Zen Way."  However, it seems like the Lakers are hellbent on out-scoring their opponents rather than locking down defensively; a strategy that rarely pans out favorably.

Also, when was the last time that the Knicks were the best team in the league?  1999? Maybe 1973? (the Dave Debusschere, Earl Monroe, Willis Reed, and yes, Phil Jackson playing days).  Regardless, at this exact moment Melo's squad is balling out of control (Jim Jones' Dipset style) and tearing apart the competition one team at a time.

What's more is that Amare' Stoudemire's absence from the active lineup is arguably the prime reason for their recent success.  That's right, the Knicks play better without one of the game's most dynamic forwards of the past ten years.  Also, for a team that's older than a good 99% of the league (avg. age is 31), they are out-running and out-gunning teams to the tune of 103+ ppg.  Plus, JR Smith is having the best season of his career thus far, with insane off-the-bench averages of 18 points and 5 boards a night on 72% shooting from downtown!  However, the most impressive statline for the Knicks right now is their stifling defensive numbers.  Their defense is allowing the league's least amount of points per game (87.8ppg), and they are leading the league in defense per 100 possessions (only giving up 96 points).  Also, they are forcing opponents into a very pedestrian FG% (42%).  If they keep this up, they might as well just bench Amare' for the remainder of the season because you shouldn't try and fix something that's not broken.

Frankly, the Knicks and the Heat may be the only NBA Championship contenders from the Eastern Conference.

Also, how long has it been since the 6th man of the year was up for NBA MVP bragging rights?  Since the creation of the 6th man of the year award in 1982, no reigning 6th man of the year has ever been considered a top MVP candidate the following season, but James Harden deserves to be in this year's MVP conversation.

You have to give credit where credit is due folks.

In all my years of basketball research and analysis, I've never seen a player as instantly explosive as Harden.  He's ready to score the second the game starts, and his ability to fight through double teams and make intelligent basketball decisions in only his first season as an NBA starter is uncanny.  The only other "James" that might be more explosive than Harden is King Lebron (who's currently ranked #1 in ESPN's MVP rankings).  In his first season as a starter, Harden's averaging 26 points, almost 5 boards, and close to 5 assists per game, and he's turned his Rockets into a legitimately competitive team that recently gave Lebron and the Heat fits in Houston a few nights ago (it took a 38 point effort from LBJ to get MIA a "W").  I don't know what's more strange: the fact that he's averaging the 3rd most points per contest in the league as a first-time starter on a new team, the fact that he stole the spotlight from Jeremy Lin, or the fact that he's a credible MVP candidate the year after he won the 6th man award.

Right now, the Thunder might wish that they hadn't wasted their max contract on Westbrook last January because Harden is worth franchising and he's worth every penny of his 5 year, $80 million max deal in Houston.

He's just scary good.

Tune in this weekend for some more NBA lessons from the "Workaholics."

Mike D'Antoni is the wrong choice for the Lakers

by Ryan Henry

As, Jerry Buss gets ready to unveil his new toy, I have some bad news for him.

Mike D’Antoni is a terrible fit for the LA Lakers.

Everybody was so ready for the Lakers to, yet again, announce Phil Jackson as the coach of this year’s new super team that nobody thought about any other options. Apparently the Lakers forgot to do that as well.

For the uninitiated, D’Antoni made his name with the 2004-2005 Phoenix Suns. Having just acquired Steve Nash (now of the LA Lakers), D’Antoni in his first full year installed the “Seven seconds or less” offense. Nash directed the Suns to the top offense, an MVP trophy and D’Antoni to a NBA Coach of the Year award. He won 50 or more games in four consecutive seasons before leaving for the New York Knicks. He promptly experienced the first two losing seasons

Mike D'Antoni named Lakers head coach; Kobe and Phil Jackson both suprised

Los Angeles - Lakers will name Mike D'Antoni as their new head coach to replace Mike Brown. This  was Phil Jackson's job to turn down, but never got the chance. Jackson's agent was scheduled to meet with the Lakers front office today to discuss compensation. At midnight, Mitch Kupchak and the Buss family switched gears and agreed to terms with D'Antoni. Sources close to the team say the move away from Phil was a concern that the new players will not be able to adopt the triangle offense made famous by Jackson as he won five championships with the Lakers and six with the Chicago Bulls. Kobe Bryant wad suprised by the but on board with the hiring.

Steve Nash played for D'Antoni in Phoenix and will be able to run the pick roll with Dwight Howard.

Grambling loses basketball season opener to Cleveland State

Cleveland, OH (November 9th,2012) - The Grambling state University Men's Basketball team lost their season opener on the road to Cleveland State by the score of 92-49. Leading the way for the G-Men was Terry Rose with 16 points, while P.J. Roberson led the Tigers in rebounding with six boards. As a team the Tigers were out rebounded by Vikings 39-24.

The Tigers shot the ball extremely well from the charity stripe as they were 80 percent from the line. The Tigers will continue their three game road trip on Sunday as they will face Ball State in Muncie, Indiana. They will conclude their first road trip of the season on Tuesday as they will go back to Ohio to face Miami of Ohio.

Mike Brown out as Lakers head coach

Los Angeles - The Lakers organization as decided to part ways with Mike Brown after starting their blockbuster season 1-4. During last night's game, Kobe Bryant gave his then coach the "death stare", but he did later describe it more as frustration than anger.

Sitting in Brown's pregame press conference before the season opener against the Mavs, everyone looked puzzled when he said that he did not expect the team to really start to gel until January. Maybe he did not realize he was coaching in LA, not Cleveland.

Fantasy Football Midseason Report

by Ryan Henry

We have arrived at the halfway mark of this NFL season, and with it come a number of fantasy football booms and busts. Let’s take a look at what I got wrong, what I got right and who you should be targeting going forward.

Busts

Matthew Stafford has pretty universally disappointed fantasy owners. He went into the season as basically the consensus number 5 quarterback, and many had to spend a second round pick in order to get him. The hype surrounding Stafford was enormous.

SHAWN MARION OUT WITH SPRAINED LEFT MCL

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks announced today that an MRI confirmed forward Shawn Marion has a sprained leftmedial collateral ligament (MCL).  He will be listed as out tomorrow and will not travel with the team to New York and Charlotte later this week.  He will be re-evaluated next week.

In four games this season, Marion has averaged 8.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 blocks in 27.0 minutes while shooting 51.9% (14-27 FGs) from the field.

OKC Thunder's big mistake: Not starting James Harden over Russell Westbrook

Now that we have finally started the 2012-13 NBA season, who would have predicted during last June's finals that Dwight Howard and Steve Nash would be Lakers, Ray Allen would be in his green for red in Miami, and that James Harden would be in a Houston Rocket uniform.

The Harden trade has so far been the most surprising trade this season. What was OKC thinking?

Tony Romo not happy with Jason Garrett's playcalling after Atlanta loss

Dallas - The Cowboys lost to the Atlanta Falcons last night 19-13. Dallas started the game with two great drives on offense that only netted 6 points. This season quarterback Tony Romo has had to call more audibles than any other time in his career. The reason, based on a team insider, is his dislike for some of the plays head coach and offensive coordinator Jason Garrett is calling.

Mavericks sign Troy Murphy and waive Eddy Curry

DALLAS — The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have signed free agent center Troy Murphy. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Murphy (6-11, 245) was the 14 th overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors and has played in 715 games (481 starts) with Golden State, Indiana, New Jersey, Boston and Los Angeles Lakers. He holds career averages of 10.9 points, 7.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 27.5 minutes per game.

Murphy has averaged a points-rebounds double-double four times in his career, most recently in 2009-10 when, as a member of the Indiana Pacers, he averaged 14.6 points and 10.2 rebounds. Murphy spent last year with the Lakers and played in 59 games during the lockout-shortened season.

The Morristown, N.J., native played collegiately at Notre Dame where he was a consensus All-America selection as a sophomore and a junior and was an early-entry candidate in the 2001 NBA Draft.

Murphy will replace Eddy Curry on the Mavericks’ 15-man roster. Curry was waived after playing in the first two regular season games for Dallas. Curry averaged 4.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 12.5 minutes.
